Defensive Tactics

Designed to introduce students to concepts and skills that will enhance their ability to perform their duties in a safe manner and thereby reduce the likelihood of officer injury. This course will cover techniques designed to meet an officer’s legal objectives during a use of force incident while subjecting an offender to the lowest risk of injury possible. The course will fully review how an officer physically and psychologically responds in a use of force incident and offer solutions to biological responses to stress. Common indicators of violence will be introduced and demonstrated as well as offering effective means of response to a violent stimulus. Techniques introduced in this course will include tactical handcuffing, defensive striking, blocking, joint manipulation, balance displacement, ground fighting, weapon retention, and disarming. The course will culminate in the students using skills introduced throughout the course in stimulus response scenarios.
